It's not you, it's me: 7 eye-openers that inspired me to become a health coach

If you've been surfing around the Align+Clear site, you probably know we offer growth mindset, ancestral health and integration coaching programs. (The ultimate mind-body-spirit connection!) We leverage the same evolutionary behavior and positive psychology concepts across all of them, with the goal of empowering you to take control of your own health and wellness — on your own terms.

"On your own terms" is a critical founding element of our purpose. I've seen friends, family (and at times, myself), feel out of control with health conditions, seemingly endless prescriptions and doctor visits. I've also witnessed people transform their own health by making more informed decisions, advocating for themselves and following their intuition.

In the summer of 2019, I was determined to get healthier. For me, that meant eating better, getting more sleep, moving more and finding my own happiness. It wasn't the first time I'd been down this road, but I was determined to end the struggle by making lifelong changes. Much of my spare time was spent researching optimal human health, understanding the best eating patterns and how to cook meals from scratch (nothing canned, boxed or frozen!) that tasted amazing and didn't feel intimidating to make. Once I discovered what worked, my routines flowed like clockwork into months of consistency that got the results I was looking for.

My 7 Eye-Openers

  1. Putting your own needs first, learning how to listen to your body, following your intuition and knowing what works best for you is the most powerful tool when you're trying to create lasting habit change. (P.S. We have a workbook for this!)

  2. Just like "big pharma," when you understand the concept and implications of "big food," misleading ingredient names, confusing product labels and food marketing campaigns over the last 100 years, making healthier eating choices gets a heck of a lot easier.

  3. You can use social media as an educational tool for improved wellness, recipe ideas, success stories, influencer tips, new research and reminder of good habits, rather than doom scrolling and celebrity updates.

  4. By understanding what causes hunger, distinguishing the physical (Maybe I’m thirsty but my brain can’t tell the difference?) from the emotional (I’m bored, what can I eat?) and other nuances, you can better decipher signals from your body.

  5. When you start to see food truly as fuel and nutrition — not as a crutch, not a frenemy, not as a requirement at specific times of the day — you can free yourself from social norms and start to focus on how you'd like to nourish yourself.

  6. My personal favorite: you don’t have to kill yourself with cardio (nor should you, since research shows it may be doing more harm than good) to lose weight, build muscle or get heart-healthy.

  7. Lastly, 80% of your body composition is determined by how you eat — this was the biggest eye-opener and it drove me to really focus on what I was eating, how I food prepped and whether I bought organic or not.

These were all game-changers in my 40-year battle with how to understand my body. Fast forward to January 2022, when I started looking for ways to share my experience with other people, especially those struggling with their own health issues. Six months later, I became a certified Primal Health Coach, through a program that aligned perfectly with how I'd been living, what I'd been researching and offered fascinating insight about the keys to optimal health and wellness.

If my list was eye-opening for you, I've got many more to share! We might be a great fit. You can review and purchase our growth mindset, ancestral health and integration coaching programs or book a 20-minute free consult to address specific questions.
